It’s showtime for Apple’s streaming service The company’s revamped TV app will be on Macs, iPads and, of course, iPhones. The app brings together various streaming services — except, notably, Netflix — in one place and serves up recommendations for what you should watch next. “Everything you saw is amazing on iPhone,” said Peter Stern, Apple vice president of services. The TV app even will come to smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony and Vizio and streaming video boxes from Roku and Amazon. “Now that you’ve seen the new Apple TV app, you’re going to want it on all of your screens,” Stern added.Apple didn’t specify where its biggest news of the day, its TV Plus streaming video service, will be available when it goes live, but it’s likely to be found in the same places as the TV app, a feature of iOS, MacOS and smart TVs. Even Oprah made an appearance to promote why she’s working with Apple on Apple TV Plus. Hint: It has a lot to do with the iPhone. “A billion devices, y’all!” Oprah told the crowd. Apple remains the iPhone company. Colin Gillis, analyst, Chatham Road Partners CNET editors break down Apple’s TV Plus event For now, though, those people are out of luck. On Monday, Apple didn’t say a word about any of its services coming to Android or Windows devices. It didn’t even say if its TV content could be accessed through a desktop web browser. And an Apple spokesperson said the company didn’t have more information to share beyond what it said on stage Monday.”People are used to watching content on any device they have at the time, and it’s not always on Apple devices,” Technalysis Research analyst Bob O’Donnell said. “Apple can’t make services truly successful if it’s only on its own devices.”Tiptoeing outside the walled gardenThere are signs Apple may not be a completely walled garden for long. The company has long created a version of its iTunes service that works on Windows computers. That proved to be a smart move from the start, with downloads jumping when iTunes became available on Windows PCs in late 2003, about six months after the service launched on Macs.Since then, however, Apple’s services have primarily stayed inside the Apple ecosystem, aside from Apple Music. There’s an Apple Music app for Android, which Apple first offered as a beta before rolling it out broadly. And in December, the company rolled out Apple Music for Amazon Echo speakers, allowing users to ask the Alexa voice assistant to play tracks from Apple’s streaming service. But Apple’s Android app doesn’t work as flawlessly as the iOS version, and new features often appear months or even years after they hit the iOS app. In January at CES, Apple made yet another step into putting its services on rival devices by partnering with major TV makers. Samsung’s smart TVs will offer support for iTunes movies and TV shows beginning this spring. Samsung TVs will also support AirPlay 2, Apple’s upgraded Wi-Fi audio streaming technology, allowing customers to stream videos, music and other content directly to their TV from an Apple device. While Samsung is the only TV maker to offer iTunes TV and videos on its sets, other companies — LG, Vizio and Sony — will let users stream content from their iPhones, iPads and Macs to their televisions. Phones Tablets Computers Digital Media TV and Movies Overall, Monday’s event was big on hype and short on details. Aside from Apple News Plus, nothing announced could be accessed right away. Apple touted partner after partner for its gaming and TV services, but it didn’t give many details about pricing or when we can subscribe to them. One thing, however, was supremely clear: Despite Apple’s declarations that it wants to become a services powerhouse, at heart it’s still “the iPhone company.”About two-thirds of the company’s revenue comes from its smartphone, an influx of money that helped it become the first trillion-dollar US company. That reliance has become a problem because people have upgraded their devices less often. Apple’s no longer valued at over a trillion dollars, and earlier this year, it reported a rare miss in quarterly sales because of weaker iPhone demand. Apple has an opportunity with its new services to woo people who just like to watch TV, read the news or play games on their mobile devices. People who own iPhones, iPads and Macs already buy into Apple’s message. It’s everyone else, those Android and Windows device owners, who Apple could target as an opportunity for real expansion. • Aug 31 • iPhone 11, Apple Watch 5 and more: The final rumors At its event Monday, Apple went even further. Its redesigned TV app will land on Samsung smart TVs this spring, then move to LG, Sony and Vizio TVs. Roku and Amazon Fire TV streaming-video devices also will be supported. But that’s where its openness ends. At least in the beginning, none of the services appear to work with Android or Windows.Closing itself off from Android and Windows devices shuts Apple off from a significant percentage of the phone, tablet and PC markets. About 85 percent of all smartphones run Android, according to IDC, and that’s not changing for the foreseeable future. More than half of the world’s tablets also use Android, according to Net Applications, and over 85 percent of all desktop and laptop computers in the world run Windows, the researcher said.Apple likely will eventually make its services run on rival devices. If it’s serious about becoming more than an iPhone maker, it has to.But no matter how much it does in services, Apple’s reliance on the iPhone isn’t ending anytime soon.”Video streaming is not going to save shares of [Apple] if the iPhone market declines,” Chatham Road Partners analyst Colin Gillis noted. “Apple remains the iPhone company.”The story originally ran at 5 a.m. PT. Tags 97 Photos 10 Apple is expanding the services it offers, but most of its sales still come from the iPhone. Screenshot by CNET Apple just can’t shake that iPhone addiction. At a flashy event on Monday, the company time and time again stressed how great its services will work on its mobile devices. For its premium Apple News Plus subscription package, magazines have been designed to take advantage of the iPhone or iPad, adding animated covers and automatically downloading content for convenience. “I can read full magazine issues no matter where or when, right from my phone,” said Wyatt Mitchell, Apple’s director of design for applications, during Monday’s event. The Apple Arcade game subscription service will give Apple device users unlimited access to more than 100 new and exclusive games. “You won’t find these games on any other mobile platform or any other subscription service,” said Ann Thai, a senior product manager for the App Store. And Apple’s new no-fee credit card, Apple Card, requires an iPhone to work. “It can do all sorts of things no other credit card can do,” said Jennifer Bailey, head of Apple Pay. “For starters, you don’t have to wait days to get your card. Now playing: Watch this: 5 Photos Comments Emails between police and Ring showed tactics the Amazon-owned video doorbell company used to convince officers to join its program. Chris Monroe/CNET Up to 250 police departments have joined Amazon’s Ring Neighbors program, a neighborhood watch app, but these deals don’t happen overnight. For the Chula Vista police department in California, Ring spent more than a year offering discounts and applying peer pressure with constant reminders and emails to convince officers to sign up. The Chula Vista police department signed up for Ring’s Neighbors program in May, but the courtship started in March 2018, according to documents obtained by CNET through a Freedom of Information Act request. The video doorbell company pitched the program to the police department two months before it was publicly announced. These documents detail how Ring’s staff convinced a local police department in California to join Neighbors, an app released by the company in May 2018. When police didn’t respond, Ring would follow up by noting neighboring law enforcement agencies that have joined, pushing for the Chula Vista police to join them. The tactics also offer a window into how Ring, which retail giant Amazon purchased last year for $839 million, has struck partnerships with police departments across the country. Police consider it a tool for obtaining video in investigations, as well as creating surveillance networks in residential neighborhoods. But these relationships are cause for alarm among privacy advocates, who raise concerns that a tech giant like Amazon is helping police create surveillance networks. “A long term goal for CVPD is to have a real-time crime center which will be doing a myriad of things. One of those things would be leveraging civilian surveillance cameras in the city to aid us in solving crime and learning about crime patterns,” CVPD’s community policing Sgt. Frank Giaime said in an email to Ring. “As the crime analysis unit’s capacity increases, I would like to integrate a program like this to help us build a partnership with the community through technology.”Ring didn’t respond to a request for comment.”No, the Chula Vista Police Department did not feel pressured in any way to partner with Ring’s Neighbors app,” the CVPD’s investigations division Capt. Phil Collum said in an email. For the CVPD, the courtship began with a cold pitch. Discounts ringingThe first email from Ring’s outreach coordinator to the Chula Vista police department came in March 2018.The message opened with an introduction and a comment on an increase in crime in the area.”I recently came across this News clip of an uptick in home break-ins in Chula Vista,” the coordinator wrote. “As an extension of Ring’s Neighborhoods initiative, I’m reaching out to share an offer to all public safety agencies that actively participate in either crime prevention or community policing.” He offered to donate a free video doorbell, as well as discounts of up to $50 for more cameras. The email also referenced a Ring pilot program that claimed it reduced crime rates. MIT Technology Review scrutinized that study last October and found that the evidence was flimsy. The Chula Vista police didn’t respond for 10 days, and the outreach coordinator followed up, this time with a flier on different Ring products and a $50 promo code for every officer in the department on video doorbells.CPVD responded and said it would follow up, giving Ring a foot in the door. There’s no email communication between the two until about three months later, in May 2018. The same coordinator said Raymond Pollum, Ring’s head of law enforcement partnerships, would be in the San Diego area demonstrating tools for other police departments.Pollum met with the CVPD department on May 3, 2018, and provided a demonstration of Neighbors and the police dashboard. He followed up with an email four days later and attached a memorandum of understanding “for consideration,” even though CVPD hadn’t agreed to join the program yet.Chula Vista’s police department promoting a Ring giveaway for National Night Out in August. Instagram The police department responded a month later, telling Pollum it sent the proposed contract to higher-ups in June. When he didn’t get a response for another month, Pollum followed up a month later, sending police a link to a crime solved in Tampa, Florida, through Ring’s cameras. CVPD didn’t respond to that message. At the same time, the department was coordinating National Night Out, an annual police-community event for promoting neighborhood safety. Ring was a sponsor for it, and its coordinator promoted contests and giveaways for free video doorbells and discounts at CVPD’s event.”We appreciate the goodies you’re sending and are most interested in having someone man a booth,” Angela Gaines, CVPD’s police community relations officer, told Ring in an email.Ring had brought 20 video doorbell kits for the police community event that August.PressuringThe peer pressure campaign started in January 2019, after surrounding police departments partnered with Ring. Pollum had given the department another demo, and sent the CVPD the memorandum of understanding again on Feb. 1. Giaime told Ring that the department was “eager” to sign the contract but needed to send it off to the chain of command for approval. He told Pollum it would take a few weeks to get a formal presentation together. Four days after Ring’s demonstration, Pollum followed up with another email. “We executed the La Mesa PD MOU yesterday, so they will join Carlsbad PD and Oceanside PD as San Diego LE portal participants,” Pollum wrote. “Not sure if peer pressure is a good thing or not, but wanted to at least make you aware that they are joining the program and will be onboarded shortly.”About three weeks later, on Feb. 21, Pollum followed up and told the sergeant that the La Mesa police department joined Ring, and the San Diego sheriff’s department approved the MOU. Again, Giaime told Pollum he would need a few weeks to put together the presentation and get approval from the command staff. Ring followed up in a month and a half, listing even more police departments that are signing up with the company. “As Chula Vista Police Department considers the benefits of gaining access to the Neighbors Portal, I thought it might be helpful to know of other agencies in the area that have joined,” Pollum wrote on April 2. He listed the San Diego County sheriff’s department, along with police in Oceanside, Carlsbad and La Mesa, and noted that officers in Escondido and National City were considering the program. Six days after that, Ring sent another email to CVPD with the same message. “SD Sheriff’s joined a couple of weeks ago so I’m hoping to get the other major cities in San Diego onboard quickly. Can you give me a quick update on where things stand?” Pollum wrote. Giaime responded with an apology, noting that the police “had a lot of things going on” during that time. He made the presentation to higher-ups on April 26, and four days later, the Chula Vista Police Department signed Ring’s contract, which went into effect on May 1. The department officially announced it joined three months later, on its Instagram page. After a year of emails, discounts and peer pressure from Ring’s executives, CVPD became one of hundreds of police departments to join Ring. The Rijksmuseum is famous for its fine art collections, especially paintings by Rembrandt and other masters. One of its lesser known objects, the “moon rock”, was first unveiled in October 2006 as the centerpiece of a “Fly me to the moon” exhibition. At that time, the museum said the rock symbolized the “exploration of the unknown, colonization of far-away places and bringing back of treasures…” A reading about the “moon rock” was even held on October 7 because it was a full moon! The rock was given as a private gift to former prime minister Willem Drees Jr in 1969 by the U.S. ambassador to The Netherlands, J. William Middendorf II, during a visit by the Apollo 11 astronauts, Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin, soon after the first moon landing. Drees had been out of office for 11 years, but was considered an elder statesman. When Drees died in 1988, the rock was donated to the Rijksmuseum, where it has remained ever since. According to a museum spokeswoman, Ms Van Gelder, no one doubted the authenticity of the rock because it was in the prime minister’s own collection, and they had vetted the acquisition by a phone call to NASA. According to an article published by the Rijksmuseum, at one time the rock was insured for approximately half a million dollars, but its actual value is probably no more than around $70.Former U.S. ambassador, Mr Middendorf was unable to recall the exact details of how the rock came to be in the U.S. State Department’s possession. It is known that NASA gave lunar rocks to over 100 countries in the 1970s, but when the rock was displayed in 2006 a space expert told the museum he doubted any material would have been given away so soon after the manned lunar landing.Researchers from the Free University of Amsterdam immediately doubted the rock was from the moon, and began extensive testing. The tests concluded the rock was petrified wood. U.S. embassy officials were unable to explain the findings, but are investigating.Even though the tests found the piece is not of lunar origin, the Rijksmuseum curators say they will keep it anyway as a curiosity.© 2009 PhysOrg.com Citation: Moon Rock Turns Out to be Fake (2009, September 1) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2009-09-moon-fake.html Explore further (PhysOrg.com) — The Dutch national Rijksmuseum made an embarrassing announcement last week that one of its most loved possessions, a moon rock, is a fake — just an old piece of petrified wood that’s never been anywhere near the moon. Astronauts who landed on the Moon collected 2,415 samples of Moon rocks weighing a total of 842 pounds (382 kilograms). Most of these rocks were collected during the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions.
