People think it must be very easy and immediately say ‘obviously Juve will win it,’ but people must know it’s not easy. It takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to achieve that,” Pjanic told Football Italia.Franck Ribery, FiorentinaFiorentina owner: “Ribery played better than Ronaldo!” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso was left gushing over Franck Ribery’s performance against Juventus, which he rates above that of even Cristiano Ronaldo’s.“Napoli are strong and to be respected. I know Inter’s Coach well, Luciano Spalletti is very smart. They had a few problems at the start, but are now doing very well and we saw it in yesterday’s victory against Lazio.”“I expect these two sides to be up there with us to the end. It’s a long campaign, we are only at the beginning and it’ll be a great battle. We hope to win, but nothing is to be taken for granted with those two behind us,” he added.“Obviously, the Champions League is one of the prime objectives for us, the club and the fans. Moyes Toni Kroos agreed to join Man Utd with me

first_imgFormer Manchester United boss David Moyes revealed he had secured Toni Kroos’ services before he was fired from the clubMoyes was brought into Old Trafford in 2013 to replace the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, who had retired after winning another Premier League title. However, Moyes’ reign in charge at United only lasted 10 months with the club board replacing him with Ryan Giggs in April 2014 on an interim basis. Now Moyes has revealed that he had actually beaten Real Madrid to signing Kroos from Bayern Munich with a verbal agreement. But the Scotsman’s demise at United led to Real signing Kroos instead on a six-year contract.“Toni Kroos had agreed to come Manchester United with me,” Moyes told talkSPORT.“I met him and his wife and we agreed on it all when he was at Bayern Munich. But it was only going to get done at the end of the season before he joined Real Madrid.”Moyes won 27 of his 51 matches in charge at United and was sacked with the club only seventh in the Premier League table. But the 55-year-old is adamant he deserved more time to turn things around at United.harry maguire, manchester UnitedMaguire says United need to build on today’s win George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Harry Maguire wants his United teammates to build on the victory over Leicester City.During the summer, Harry Maguire was referred to as the ultimate…“Do I feel I should have been given more time? Of course, I do,” added Moyes.“To go to a club like Manchester United and follow someone like Sir Alex after the time he had been there, to stay for ten months…“It couldn’t be a revolution at Manchester United, it had to be evolution. It had to take time.“I wasn’t going to come in and change all the things Alex had done, but there were lots of things that had to be changed at the club.“You look at the way Chelsea and Man City had been doing things and changing things along the way – Manchester United had been winning because they had a special manager and a special group of players.“But when that all changed, it was going to take time to find its way.“I still think they’re having difficult times at the moment.”Moyes has since coached Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham United.last_img read more

Smart lightbulbs could be exporting your personal data to China

David Becker / Getty Images Today, you can operate almost everything in your house from your phone. But, like most technology, nothing is perfect. While smart lightbulbs themselves aren’t dangerous, the apps and platforms that control them might be. Last month, Dark Cubed, an American cybersecurity company, released its State of IoT Security report and detailed potential security threats in smart home devices. Dark Cubed said it purchased several in-home smart devices that can be found at Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy or other stores and tested their security. While the company said that it wasn’t surprising that most of the apps weren’t secure, the IoT (Internet of Things) lightbulbs were even worse. According to Dark Cubed, simply dimming your smart lightbulb could be enabling real-time location sharing. “What was surprising was the fact that some of these devices, such as the IoT lightbulb, were so insecure that it is beyond what could be considered a mistake,” Dark Cubed reported. “We found that the extent to which the manufacturers and infrastructure associated with these devices communicate with, or is related to, China is shocking and has significant national security implications.”The company also noted that while most IoT devices are manufactured in China, some of the tested devices and their companion apps were secure and didn’t share data.”Unfortunately, consumers have no ability to differentiate between the safe and the dangerous devices given the lack of focus on security by retailers,” Dark Cubed said in its report. Bangladesh moving ahead for its friendly ties with all PM

first_imgPrime minister Sheikh Hasina addresses a civic reception at Beijing on Wednesday. Photo: UNBNoting that Bangladesh has friendly relations with all, prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said Bangladesh is marching forward and getting foreign investment as the country has no hostility to anyone.”We’ve friendly relations with all. Now, Bangladesh has no hostile relation with anyone as it follows the foreign policy adopted by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman….this is why Bangladesh is marching forward and receiving investment,” she said referring to Bangladesh’s friendly relations with both China and India. The prime minister made the remarks while addressing a civic reception accorded to her at Legendale Hotel here.Expatriate Bangladeshis hosted the reception under the supervision of Bangladesh embassy in Beijing on the occasion of the prime minister’s bilateral official visit to China.Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh has moving forward following the policy – ‘Friendship to all and malice to none’, which had been taken by the Father of the Nation.”If there’s any stable government and democratic environment, it can attract investment,” she said, adding that her government is setting up 100 special economic zones in the country.Noting that China turned into the world’s 2nd largest economy from a poor one in the last 70 years, the prime minister urged expatriate Bangladeshis to learn from the China’s history and development. She said China still faces obstacles as many will not want to see a country from this region or Asia to be the largest economy in the world.Mentioning that Bangabandhu had been taking the country forward with 7 per cent GDP growth by building a war-ravaged country within only three and a half years, she said the anti-liberation forces hindered the development journey of the country.Though the killers of the Father of the Nation were tried, those who had been behind the killing and its conspirators are yet to be identified, Sheikh Hasina, also the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu, said. She said time will come when the true facts (behind the killing) come to the fore.About the country’s development in the last one decade, Sheikh Hasina said the country’s GDP growth is now 8.10 per cent and her government passed the Tk 5231.90 billion budget for 2019-20 fiscal year recently.Criticising the anti-liberation forces, she said those who had not wanted the independence of Bangladesh and kept the country crippled never find anything good of the government. There is still a class of people in the country who are blind and who do not like democratic environment as they are evaluated during the period of martial law or emergency period or illegal regimes, not in a democratic environment, the prime minister said. “They always remain ready to sell themselves.”Noting that this class of people was in power for 29 years, she said, “We did the development in the 10 years what they didn’t do in the 29 years.”Sheikh Hasina said the government has taken development projects of some Tk 2000 billion for the current fiscal year and 90 per cent of the country’s development budget is implemented with own finance. “The share of foreign donation is 0.8 per cent in the country’s budget,” she added. She urged the expatriate Bangladeshis to work for the country coming up with innovative ideas.Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen also spoke at the event conducted by Bangladesh ambassador to China Md Fazlul Karim. Among expatriate Bangladeshis, Engineer Shamsul Haque spoke on the occasion. The prime minister arrived in Beijingon Wednesday morning after joining the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Annual Meeting of New Champions, 2019 held in Dalian city.Sheikh Hasina departed from Dhaka for China on 1 July and is scheduled to leave here for Dhaka on 6 July.last_img read more

Houston Officials Criticize Federal Restraining Order Say Cleanup Coming To Encampment

first_img“It’s absolutely a disingenuous comment,” said American Civil Liberties Union attorney Trisha Trigilio, regarding Turner’s remarks that the restraining order prevents the city from properly ensuring health and safety in the camps. “The truth is that all the injunction said is that officers can’t ticket or arrest homeless people for living in tents, the city has every other policy option available,” she said. Trigilio said the city should install portable toilets and hand-washing stations to combat the spread of disease. The ACLU maintains that the city’s restrictions are a form of cruel punishment against the homeless. The ACLU is representing three homeless Houstonians in a lawsuit responsible for the restraining order.  A federal judge has asked for expedited briefs on the case which the city attorney said leads him to think the case will be decided quickly.   X To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Sharecenter_img Listen Davis LandMayor Sylvester Turner and other Houston officials call for the cleanup of encampments within the city.A man was killed Tuesday near an encampment under 1-69 on Caroline Street, a fact Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is using to highlight what he said are increasingly dangerous conditions for Houston’s unsheltered.During a press conference at the site, Turner and other city officials called on a federal judge to undo a temporary restraining order that prevents the city from enforcing its restrictions on encampments. City officials also raised concerns of a public health problem. They say human waste in the camps is contaminating soil and spreading disease. Turner said a “deep cleansing” of the Caroline Street camp will begin next week, a process that involves clearing out anyone camped at the site, removing trash and human waste. “It’s a public space where everyone has the right to go,” Turner said, “but it’s a place where no one has the right to go and setup and take over a public space with tents, stoves furniture, and other property.”Davis LandA homeless encampment under I-69 where a man was shot and killed Tuesday. The ordinances blocked by the court aimed to limit the size and scope of what items people could bring onto public property, an effort to get people to choose city housing over encampments. With the restraining order in effect and the city’s ability to regulate the camps limited, Turner said sanitation and crime within the encampments has gotten worse.MORE: Addressing Houston’s Homeless Encampments 00:00 /10:25last_img read more

Nancy Dubuc Vice Will Be Profitable Within a Fiscal Year

first_imgVice will become a profitable enterprise “within a fiscal year,” CEO Nancy Dubuc said Thursday during her Q&A at the New York Times’ Dealbook conference.Dubuc was pressed in Q&A with Dealbook chief Andrew Ross Sorkin about the health of the company and the role of founder and current chairman Shane Smith in the operations of the company.“Not so much,” Dubuc said when pressed by Sorkin about Smith’s involvement. “I run the show.” She noted that he send her a lot of text messages. “It’s usually him saying ‘Yes Nancy,’ ” she added.Dubuc noted that Vice achieved profitability a few years ago but then went back into the red as it invested in the launch of the linear Viceland cable channel and international expansion initiatives. Pressed for a timeline by Sorkin, Dubuc said “very, very quickly it will be profitable again.” Popular on Variety Dubuc emphasized that Vice is not on the block right now, which means that questions about how far the company’s valuation may have fallen in the past few months was not relevant. Vice was valued at $5.7 billion in June 2017 when it received a $450 million investment from TPG.“Valuation only matters if you’re for sale and we’re not for sale right now,” Dubuc said. The TPG investment came with strings that could wind up turning debt into equity in Vice starting in about 18 months if the company is unable to reach selected fiscal target. Dubuc said her goal is to “have the free cash flow to manage that.”Dubuc also stressed that Vice is more than strictly a digital media company. The perception that Viceland has been a flop is wrong but she acknowledged it is having distribution challenges in the U.S.“We’re still growing,” she said. “We don’t really get much credit for that. She pointed to the decisions by large MVPDs such as Comcast to offer Viceland on a pricy tier rather than in the low-cost packages that would appeal most to Viceland’s youthful target audience. “They tier us to the most expensive packages which makes no sense,” she said.In addition to Viceland, Vice’s strategy in content distribution remains to be a supplier to numerous platforms rather than to create its own streaming offering. Vice’s work with HBO and others has greatly expanded its reach and profile. Her focus is on revving up the “flywheel” to better exploit Vice-produced content across its digital, TV, advertising and publishing platforms.“We’re not in the TV business just to be in the TV business. We’re in the TV business as part of an eco- system,” she said. “There’s a great opportunity to be in service as a content creator for all of these platforms (rather) than to put a wall around ourselves just for a few million customers.”center_img ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Trump claimed that Mueller “terminated the emails… He terminated them. They’re gone. And that’s illegal. That’s a crime,” with no indication of what emails he was referring to.center_img Meanwhile, Trump asserted that Big Tech companies are “all Democrats” and that their services are “totally biased toward Democrats.” Inexplicably, he argued that Twitter — where Trump has over 61 million followers — makes it difficult for people to follow him on the platform. Trump famously uses Twitter to post announcements and rants on a daily basis.“What they did to me on Twitter is incredible,” he said. “I have millions and millions of followers, but I will tell you, they make it very hard for people to join me [on] Twitter and they make it very much harder for me to get out the message.”In the interview with Fox Business, Trump also called out alleged bias by Google, referring to video footage released Monday by conservative group Project Veritas (which is notorious for using deceptive tactics) that purports to show a Google executive saying the company should be working to prevent “the next Trump situation.”Trump said Twitter “should be sued because what’s happening with the bias,” and added, “now you see it with that executive yesterday from Google. The hatred for the Republicans. It’s not even like, ‘Gee! Let’s lean Democrat.’”In response to Trump’s comments, a Google rep said, “We build our products with extraordinary care and safeguards to be a trustworthy source of information for everyone, without any regard for political viewpoint. Our rating guidelines are publicly visible for all to see.”Regarding the Project Veritas video, the Google exec in question — Jen Gennai, the company’s head of responsible innovation, global affairs — posted a blog response in which she said in part, “Unfortunately, I now know that these people lied about their true identities, filmed me without my consent, selectively edited and spliced the video to distort my words and the actions of my employer, and published it widely online.” She said the “Trump situation” she referred to was about how Google’s Trust and Safety team is working to help prevent the kinds of online foreign interference that happened in during the 2016 election. President Trump suggested the U.S. government might sue technology giants including Facebook and Google — though he didn’t spell out what the basis for such lawsuits might be — while he once again railed against the supposed anti-conservative bias of Silicon Valley companies. In an interview Wednesday with Fox Business Network, he took issue with the European Commission’s moves to impose antitrust penalties against tech companies including Google.“Look, we should be suing Google and Facebook and all that, which perhaps we will, OK?” Trump said in the interview. The U.S. Department of Justice and the FTC are said to be considering launching antitrust investigations into Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple. Politicians including Sen. Elizabeth Warren have called for the breakup of massive technology companies, but experts say that course of action is a high legal bar that’s unlikely to play out anytime soon. Sacha B. Ultrashort period brown dwarf discovered

first_img More information: James A. G. Jackman, et al. NGTS-7Ab: An ultra-short period brown dwarf transiting a tidally-locked and active M dwarf. arXiv:1906.08219v1 [astro-ph.SR]: © 2019 Science X Network Brown dwarfs are intermediate objects between planets and stars, occupying the mass range between 13 and 80 Jupiter masses. Although many brown dwarfs have been detected to date, such objects orbiting other stars are a rare find. Now, a group of astronomers led by James A.G. Jackman of University of Warwick, UK, reports the finding of new rare brown dwarf in the binary system NGTS-7AB. The system, located about 500 light years away, consists of two M-dwarf stars. The newly detected brown dwarf orbits the primary star known as NGTS-7A and therefore received designation NGTS-7Ab.The discovery occurred during the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS), a ground-based robotic search for exoplanets. The brown dwarf nature of the new object was confirmed by follow-up observations.”We have reported the discovery of NGTS-7Ab, a high mass transiting brown dwarf orbiting an M-star with an orbital period of 16.2 hours,” the astronomers wrote in the paper.According to the study, the discovery is significant due to the very short orbital period of the newly found object and its relatively high mass. NGTS-7Ab represents the so-called “brown dwarf desert,” describing the paucity of massive brown dwarfs (with masses greater than 35 Jupiter masses) orbiting their hosts at a relatively close distance (less than 3.0 AU).NGTS-7Ab was found to orbit its parent star at a separation of around 0.014 AU, and its mass is assumed to be around 75.5 Jupiter masses, which makes it one of the most massive objects of this type detected to date. The radius of this object is estimated at approximately 1.38 Jupiter radii. Moreover, NGTS-7Ab is the shortest period transiting brown dwarf around a pre-main or main sequence star so far discovered, and only the fifth brown dwarf transiting an M-star host. Summing up the results, the researchers also try to explain the ultra-short orbital period of NGTS-7Ab, noting that the M-dwarf companion could be responsible for this.”We believe NGTS-7Ab is part of a hierarchical triple system and the presence of NGTS-7B may have had a role in moving the brown dwarf into its close orbit via the Kozai-Lidov mechanism and tidal circularisation,” the authors of the paper concluded. They added that the orbit of NGTS-7Ab will most likely decay within about 5 to 10 million years due to a combination of tidal synchronisation and magnetic braking. A cup of coffee can help stick to fitness regime

first_imgStruggling to stick to fitness regime? Have a cup of coffee! According to an interesting study, the use of caffeine could help people stick to their fitness plans.Researchers said that reducing perception of effort during exercise using caffeine (or other psychoactive drugs like methylphenidate and modafinil) could help people to stick to their fitness plans. “Perception of effort is one of the main reasons why people find it difficult to stick to their fitness plans,” said professor Samuele Marcora, director of Research at University of Kent in the United Kingdom. Marcora pointed out that perceived exertion is one of the main reasons why most people choose sedentary activities for their leisure time. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Together with lack of time, physical exertion is one of the main perceived barriers to exercise, the researchers explained.Compared to watching television (zero effort), even moderate-intensity physical activities like walking requires considerable effort, they added. Marcora suggested that the use of caffeine or other psychoactive drugs to reduce the perception of effort during exercise can make the healthy choice easier. He also stated that whilst there is no strong ethical opposition to the use of psychoactive drugs to help quit smoking (nicotine) or treat obesity (appetite suppressants), the negative perception of doping in sport may prevent the use of stimulants and other psychoactive drugs to treat physical inactivity, which is responsible for twice as many deaths as obesity. The paper was published in the journal Sports Medicine.last_img read more

Two brands two brochures Insight Luxury Gold launch 2019 lineups

first_img Cindy Sosroutomo Share Friday, October 19, 2018 Two brands, two brochures: Insight & Luxury Gold launch 2019 lineups TORONTO — You can never accuse The Travel Corporation (TTC) of resting on its laurels. Following a highly successful summer 2018 season, its Insight Vacations and Luxury Gold brands are already gearing up for 2019 with brand new brochures, both of which are being called their biggest collections yet.Speaking to Travelweek at Toronto’s launch event yesterday, Insight Vacations’ CEO, Ulla Hefel Böhler, said that the company’s product offering has never been better after 40 years of business. Highlighted in its 230-page Europe & Britain 2019 brochure, Insight will travel to over 40 countries on 96 journeys and offer more than 70 Insight Experiences, which are characterized by authentic dining, stylish accommodations and small groups sizes.New for next year is the 10-day ‘Northern Lights of Scandinavia’ itinerary, which includes a meet and greet with the owner of a husky farm, visits to Akershus Castle and the Royal Palace in Oslo, and a stay at the glass-roofed Aurora Village in Ivalo for the chance to view the Northern Lights from the comfort of one’s own bed.Scandinavia, said Böhler, has always been popular for Insight during the summer months, but the company is now pushing it as a winter destination, too, that offers much more than just the Northern Lights. And because there are limited departures for ‘Northern Lights’, Böhler anticipates that it will sell out quickly. This is all the more reason for agents to push for early bookings, said Brad Ford, President of Insight Vacations. “We’re telling travellers to not wait because you run the risk of not getting the journey of your choice,” he said. Insight’s Early Booking Bonus includes 10% off and runs until Jan. 31, 2019.Also expected to sell well next year is a new 10-day Greek Island Hopper tour (“a great standalone itinerary” according to Ford), the newly enhanced ‘Jordan Experience’ (now featuring an overnight in Wadi Rum and a visit to the Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Cooperative), as well as Egypt, which Böhler said is making a big comeback for the company.More news:  Sunwing ready to launch Mazatlán-Quebec City direct this winter“We’ve been seeing so much business to Egypt, and we’re excited to say that numbers are finally coming back,” she said, adding that during a recent trip to the country, she was amazed by the sparse crowds and short lineups. “It’s much less crowded than it was before, now is definitely the time to go.”Luxury Gold, which also offers Egypt, is anticipating another stellar year with its brand new Worldwide 2019 brochure. Featuring 55 itineraries (up from 48), the brochure offers “the best of independent travel and guided vacations,” said Brett Tollman, CEO of The Travel Corporation. The brand, a collection of high-end travel experiences that has been personally curated by TTC chairman (and Brett’s father) Stanley Tollman, was launched five years ago to bring back the golden era of travel.“My father’s vision for Luxury Gold came about after seeing the success of Red Carnation Hotels and Uniworld (TTC’s high-end hotel and river cruise brands). He thought, ‘Why not do the same for land offerings?’” he told Travelweek. In addition to upscale accommodations, gourmet dining, and 40-pax maximum group sizes (with some select journeys capping at 16 and even less, now with its new Group Travel and Bespoke Journeys department), Tollman highlighted Luxury Gold’s Travelling Concierge as one of the brand’s differentiating pillars, whose sole duty is to customize trips to create a unique experience for each client. With such elevated touches, he described Luxury Gold as “the best of two worlds” (a hybrid of FIT travel and guided touring), and went so far as to put the brand above competitors A&K and Tauck. The difference, he said, is that Luxury Gold is much more agent focused.“We don’t do consumer marketing, we rely heavily on our agent partners,” he said. The company’s personal guarantee is to never steal a customer, which is backed up by its Travel Wallet program. According to Tollman, 90% of its business is repeat clients who go back to the travel agent to book. “For the other 10% who come directly to us, we’ll still pay full commission to the original agent, even if they had nothing to do with the booking.”More news:  FIVE FESTIVE FOODS TO TRY AT EUROPE’S CHRISTMAS MARKETSAnd with Luxury Gold packages priced anywhere from $8,000-$10,000 – times two per booking – “the commissions are amazing,” he said.Another value to agents is client testimonials, which are posted to TTC’s websites via third party platform Feefo. Clients are encouraged to provide post-trip feedback via email, which is then posted “with no interference from us,” said Tollman. “Consumers want validation from other consumers. By reading these reviews, they can book with 100% confidence.”And although the volume of bookings for Luxury Gold is nowhere near that of Insight Vacations’, there’s room to grow, he added.“Even though our numbers are still relatively small, we’ve grown exponentially over the past five years,” he said. “There’s plenty of capacity to grow further, which is why we need agent support.”For more information go to and About Latest Posts Cindy SosroutomoDeputy Editor at TravelweekCindy is Deputy Editor at Travelweek and has worked for the company since 2007. Ehailing firms advise passengers to prepare for new rules

first_img Letters 11 Jul 2019 Real disservice to e-hailing customers Nation 08 Jul 2019 Higher e-hailing fares expected Related News It said the average waiting time for a passenger to get a ride was within six minutes. “Unfortunately, this may change after July 12 as we anticipate a reduction of driver-partners active on the roads. “We advise passengers to pre-plan their travel by making earlier bookings, especially if they have a flight to catch or need to attend an important event,” said a Grab spokesperson.Under changes enforced by the Transport Ministry, e-hailing service vehicles must have a public service vehicle (PSV) licence, passenger insurance, e-hailing sticker and e-hailing vehicle permit (EVP) from the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).There was much hoo-ha after the PSV application process began in April, with drivers, mainly part-timers, complaining that it was a costly and cumbersome exercise. It was reported that a reduced number of drivers will be on the road when the deadline arrived as many part-time drivers preferred to opt out. There are also many others who are yet to be PSV-ready.Grab, which claimed it has about 200,000 drivers, revealed on Tuesday that only 10% of their active drivers had obtained the PSV licence.“We hope that this imbalance in supply and demand will be transient,” said the spokesperson.MyCar founder and director Mohd Noah Maideen said the company had been blasting mass notifications to their app users since yesterday, alerting them of longer waits and possibly steeper fares.Citing the low number of drivers who were PSV-compliant, he said the firm had no choice but to temporarily suspend other drivers from operating until they completed the due diligence.“From our pool of 30,000 active drivers, about 10,000 are full-timers and roughly 7,000 of them drive exclusively for MyCar.“From this number, only 400 have got their PSV licence, and this is worrying. We have to abide by the law and I have no choice but to block those who are not ready from getting on the road,” he added.MyCar is the second largest e-hailing operator, holding about 15% of industry market share.Mohd Noah urged the authorities to be lenient on enforcement, saying that many drivers were still going through the process to be PSV ready.“Getting the PSV licence is one thing. The drivers will still not be allowed on the road until APAD issues them with the EVP document, which takes time.“Should they get stopped during checks, I hope the authorities will give them a warning instead of booking them,” he said, adding that the grace period should be extended till the end of the year.Mohd Noah said the firm was continuing to get cabbies to join its platform in anticipation of a driver shortage. He said passengers should be ready to see taxis picking them up instead of private cars.Malaysian E-hailing Drivers Association (MeHDA) president Daryl Chong said according to feedback, it took too long for the PSV results to be released and for EVP permits to be issued.“But until everything is in place, they still have to adhere to the law,” he said, adding that e-hailing companies had been instructed to ban their non-compliant drivers. {{category}} {{time}} {{title}}center_img Nation 11 Jul 2019 Grab warns of possible increase in fares with new regulations PETALING JAYA: Plan your journeys, make bookings earlier and ride during off-peak hours – this is the advice given to passengers by e-hailing operators with new rules to be enforced today. The operators expect fewer e-hailing drivers on the road from today, and said passengers have been given “notice” in order not to be caught unprepared.Grab Malaysia has despatched announcements to their passengers warning them of longer waiting times, especially during peak hours and rainy days. The company, the biggest e-hailing operator in the country, said its driver-partners served a million ride bookings daily. Wee gives further details on RM15mil grant to Kojadi

first_img Nation 2d ago Wee: Kojadi wrote to MACC over RM15mil grant {{category}} {{time}} {{title}} Nation 28 Jun 2019 Kojadi will write to MACC over RM15mil grant Related News Related News Nation 11 Jul 2019 Dr Wee: Kojadi has written to MACC over RM15mil grant PETALING JAYA: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has further clarified the events surrounding the RM15mil grant given to Koperasi Jayadiri Sdn Bhd (Kojadi) by Yayasan 1MDB.Listing a chronology, he stated that in August 2012 Kojadi had informed the Co-operatives Commission (SKM) of the RM15mil grant to implement a micro-credit scheme for the youth.Later that month, SKM replied Kojadi that it had no issues concerning the grant, he said.”A few days after Pakatan Harapan won the general election (on May 18), the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) issued a letter for Kojadi to pay taxes, including penalties and fines on the RM15mil grant received from Yayasan 1MDB in 2012. The total amount to be paid was RM1,031,606.44. AdChoices广告”The Kojadi board of directors complied with IRB’s instruction and paid off the sum (on June 11),” he said in a Facebook posting on Saturday (July 13).Dr Wee said in December 2018, Kojadi failed to get the RM50mil allocation for Budget 2019, with the reason given that Kojadi and MCA were not separate organisations.”It is true that Kojadi was founded by MCA, but not all in the party is a member of the co-operative.”A person has to contribute to Kojadi and only then they are eligible for membership. Now, the co-operative is rated five stars and has about 60,000 members from different races. How can it only be for MCA members?” he said.He said on Dec 26, 2018, Kojadi chairman Datuk Ng Peng Hay wrote a letter to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner regarding the grant, asking for advice.”I was informed by Ng that he acted in line with what was agreed with the Kojadi board of directors who took their own initiative to write to Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull,” he added.Dr Wee questioned why Ng had sent a copy of a letter that he wrote to the MACC to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng as well.”Yayasan 1MDB is under the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry whereas the Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM) is under the Entrepreneur Development Ministry.”What has this got to do with the Finance Ministry?” he asked.Dr Wee said MACC replied to Kojadi’s letter on Jan 30 this year. The MACC, he added, told Kojadi that the 1Malaysia Development Board (1MDB) case was still under investigation, and had said nothing of Yayasan 1MDB.”The letter also stated that the MACC would inform Kojadi if it needed further assistance or cooperation.”So, what is wrong if Kojadi acts according to the rule of law? Fourteen board members have clarified that what was decided in a meeting on June 27, 2019 was to follow up the matter in writing with MACC, not to return the funds to them without referring to lawyers and the leadership,” he said.last_img read more
